Former Bearkat standout returns as head coach of women's basketball team
HUNTSVILLE -- Brenda Welch-Nichols, head coach the past four years at Mercer University in Macon, GA, is the new head women's basketball coach at Sam Houston State University, Director of Athletics Bobby Williams has announced. Nichols is a 1988 Sam Houston graduate, earning All-Southland Conference honors in both 1987 and 1988 in women's basketball.

Duckett lands in Washington

ATLANTA (AP) -- When T.J. Duckett and Ashley Lelie were taken with back-to-back picks in the first round of the NFL draft four years ago, some Atlanta fans wondered why the Falcons went with the bruising runner instead of the speedy receiver. Well, those folks who believed Lelie was a better fit in Atlanta finally got their wish.

Riley returns to repeat with Miami Heat

MIAMI (AP) -- Pat Riley will be coaching the Miami Heat when their NBA championship banner is raised. Riley said Wednesday he'll return as coach for the 2006-07 season, ending speculation he might retire at age 61. He led the Heat to their first league title -- and his seventh as a coach or player -- in June.

'Melo leads USA to 94-85 win over Italy SAPPORO, Japan (AP) -- With a record 35 points by Carmelo Anthony and first place in its group, the United States had plenty to celebrate Wednesday night. Anthony scored 19 points in the third quarter, leading the Americans back from a 12-point deficit to beat Italy 94-85 -- their toughest test yet in the world championships.
