Kaldi's Coffee House is hosting "Department Happy Hours" and a Trivial Pursuit competition for 24 different departments at SHSU throughout the rest of the semester.
Each individual department will have an assigned day to gather at Kaldi's in order to meet others in their department. Everyone associated with the department will receive a 10 percent discount on their food and drink purchases. There will also be a raffle available for free merchandise.
Rick Francis, the owner and operator of Kaldi's, said his goal is "to offer service to the students, faculty and staff of SHSU by offering an opportunity to get to know others associated with each specific department." Students can get a chance to meet different professors in their department, so that when they choose their classes they will have a better understanding of who they are choosing, Francis explained.
The Trivial Pursuit competition is between all 24 departments. On a department's assigned day, the participants will choose a "coordinator" to answer 10 randomly chosen questions. The questions come from 24 categories, corresponding to each of the departments involved. Since the entire department can collaborate on the answer, Francis said it is a good idea to get the professors and department chairs involved.
Every question answered correctly is one point. If the department answers all ten correctly, they will win a $100 donation to that department on behalf of Kaldi's Coffee House. As of yesterday, the School of Public Communication is in first place with seven points and the art department is in second place with six points.
After each department has played their Trivial Pursuit game, there will be a "Final Round Competition" on Thursday, May 6 between the eight highest scoring departments. The concept will be the same as the original competitions, but the number of questions asked has not yet been decided. The overall winner of the finals will receive a $100 donation to their department, and each participant from the winning team will receive a complimentary latté.
So, far, there is a tie for first place between the department of economics and international business and the department of biological science, both of which have nine out of 10 points. The department of public communication has seven points and the art department has six.
Francis said that the turnout for the first four happy hours has been great. He is appreciative of the department chairs' support and wants to continue building a close relationship with the university. Francis is very optimistic about this event and hopes it will become something students start looking forward to every year.
The happy hour for each department is from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., unless otherwise specified. Kaldi's Coffee House is located at 1627 Sam Houston Ave. For more questions on dates and times with the "Department Happy Hours," contact Kaldi's at (936) 436-0451.
